February is Science Fair month at Byrd School, something that we look forward to every other year! Students in grades one through five can participate.
Science fairs give students the opportunity to study a topic that interests them. Projects can be as varied as your child’s interests, such as sports, music, art, rocketry, psychology, and computers. Through their projects, students discover that science is found in every niche of the universe.
Science projects allow students to:
- Use the scientific method to develop an understanding of controls and variables
- Take an open and creative approach to problem solving
- Sharpen their writing skills
- Gain skills in library use
- Learn that a successful outcome is based not on personal opinion but on scientific fact
- Develop time management skills
- Develop public speaking skills as they their present projects the night of the Fair
- Develop poise and the ability to think on their feet as they showcase their work
Our Science Fair is an exciting event that encourages students to think like young scientists. Those participating have spent the past few weeks designing a science project that uses the scientific method to solve a problem.
I hope you agree that the educational benefits are numerous, as students develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving.
Some ground rules
This Thursday night, our Fair will be open to the public from 7°p.m.- 8°p.m. Participants are required to remain by their experiments so that they can explain their work.
Students who chose not to participate in the Science Fair may attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult and remain with that adult throughout the evening.
As the gym is typically very crowded during this event all children are expected to walk through gym and refrain from jumping off of the stage, hiding under the tables or running through the school. I look forward to seeing you on the 9th as we enjoy the work and enthusiasm of our young scientists.
