Gung Hay Fat Choy!
To celebrate the Year of the Pig on February 27, 2007, Byrd third graders did everything -- from eating Chinese cuisine to creating dragons out of cardboard egg cartons!

"It’s lots of fun," says
Ms. Mallach, head of Byrd’s Media Center. “They use paint, markers and we give them ‘rolling eyes,’ ribbon tails, and glue-on decorations. They come out really cute."
Art teacher Mrs. Cipolli helped the kids do Chinese letter writing, known as CHOMPS. Mrs. Sattler, Byrd’s music teacher, taught a Chinese song complete with recorders and percussion instruments, and Mr. Karcher, Byrd’s physical education teacher, helped out with all, including "The Ribbon Dragon Dance."
Ms. Mallach showed students a video, they played games on the Smart Board, viewed Web sites about the Chinese New Year, and read a book about this unique event.
All this in one day!!!!
"We help one another with the 'dragon creation' and then branch out into smaller groups for music, art, dance and library," she explains. "We gathered again to share the song and dance."
