Every day is Earth Day, if it's cold or wet or hot.  Pitch in to save the planet, it's the only one we've got.

Byrd's second graders had their Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 20, 2007.
This is an annual tradition for the second grade.  Students decorate their ”recycled” grocery bags – donated by Kilroy’s Wonder Market – with animals, trees, plants and other examples of nature's beautiful gifts.

The day's activities help them realize the importance of nature and the necessity of helping our planet, and provide Kilroy's shoppers with beautiful bags!

Organized by Mrs. Sattler, Mr. Karcher and Ms. Mallach – with close cooperation from Mrs. Reinartz and Mrs. Jakobsen – the day enables children to discuss the importance of Earth Day, sing songs, read a book and watch a video to learn more about this special day.

In the afternoon, all the second graders walked to Kilroy’s to deliver the bags, thanking Jean personally for her support. Kilroy’s then distributed the bags on Earth Day, which was officially on Sunday, April 22, 2007 this year.

Afterwards, the children ate a healthy snack of trail mix. While munching, they learned how to build a bird feeder using HUMUNGOUS PINE CONES that came directly from Pinehurst, North Carolina – thanks to Ms. Mallach! The children brought their pine cones and the instructions home for this voluntary assignment.

"We hope all our students had fun, but more importantly, realize the importance of nature and the necessity of helping our planet," said Ms. Mallach.
