Byrd and the Bee. March 29, 2007

Byrd fifth grader Aaron Slodowitz from Mrs. Cindy Lota’s homeroom tied with three other students (see below) for second place at the annual spelling bee sponsored by Glen Rock Women in Community Service (WICS). He received a $50 savings bond and a $10 gift certificate from Books, Bytes and Beyond.

Mrs. Deb Diamantis, Byrd's Reading (Rock 'N Read) specialist and, speaking of awards, Glen Rock's Teacher of the Year 2006-07, was one of the judges.  "We are so proud of him," she said.

Congratulations, Aaron!

When asked how he felt after the competition, Aaron said, "I felt very surprised that I came in second place in the spelling bee. At points, I came very close to winning, but I spelled ANTARCTICA wrong. I will never spell that word wrong again."

-  Approximately 105 students registered, 90 participated.

-  The winner of the bee was a 5th grader from Academy of our Lady.

-  The winning word was EXCRUCIATING.

As you know...

In honor of the famous explorer of the North and South poles, the school was officially named the Richard E. Byrd Elementary School in 1931.
